Amalgam, also known as Silver amalgam or silver fillings, is the cheapest and most long-lasting filling material used around the world by dentists for the last 175 years. However, amalgam use does pose potential risk. While the European Union has implemented a ban that began on 1 January 2025, for New Zealanders, the option of which filling material to have, is still a matter of personal choice. Other options include gold, composite resins, ceramics, or Stela replacements.
Why has amalgam been banned?
Amalgam is composed of 50% liquid mercury and 50% powdered alloy including silver, tin and copper. The health risks are primarily associated with mercury vapour released from the filling during the replacement or removal of the amalgam.
Should I have my Amalgam fillings removed?
Amalgam is a dark silver colour, so for a more pleasing smile, removing your amalgam fillings may be an option. The time to switch to gold, composite resin, or ceramic, or Stela replacements may be when a filling needs attention.
Tell me more about the alternatives
- Gold
Colour and formulation: Gold alloys.
Number of appointments: Minimum two
Construction: Made in a laboratory for a custom fit and cemented into place in your tooth.
Bio-compatibility: No concerns, unless placed to close to amalgam fillings.
Strength: Exceptionally strong and durable, with no corrosion. They can last for decades.
Cost: They are the most expensive option.
- Composite Resin
Colour and formulation: Tooth-coloured. Acrylic resin and powdered glass.
Number of appointments: Possibly one
Construction: Require less removal of the teeth than with amalgam fillings as they are chemically bonded to your teeth and hardened with a curing light.
Bio-compatibility: No concerns.
Strength: They can stain and chip more than other options. They are not as durable in high-stress situations, i.e. bruxism. Oral hygiene and avoiding hard foods are essential for their longevity.
Cost: The same cost as amalgam fillings.
- Ceramic / Porcelain Fillings
Colour and formulation: Tooth-coloured. Porcelain. They look like natural teeth.
Number of appointments: Two or three.
Construction: Made in a laboratory for a custom fit or with CEREC technology. Bonded to your tooth with a strong adhesive.
Bio-compatibility: No concerns.
Strength: They can handle the forces of chewing and biting. They can last up to 15 years with care.
Cost: They are more expensive than amalgam fillings.
- Stela Fillings
Colour and formulation: Tooth-coloured.
Number of appointments: One. The process is much faster than other filling options.
Construction: A combination of BPA-free resin monomers, optimised bio-active ionglass fillers, surface-modified amorphous silica, fluoride, calcium and strontium. These fillings don’t darken with age.
Bio-compatibility: No concerns.
Strength: As strong as amalgam fillings.
Cost: The same cost as amalgam fillings
